What about free-downloading

Most of the people now have their own laptops which means they would rather stay at home and watch movies and listen to musics than go the the movie theatres and concerts. However, is it legal for us to simply download the movies and songs from the Internet? In my perspective, I strongly believe that it is legal for us to download things from the Internet.

People should be able to download things from the Internet because not everything could afford those movie tickets or those music albums. Those movie directors and singers make their movies and songs to entertain the audience, and they always have enough money to make their living. Although about 70% of audience downloaded from the internet, there are still 30% of people paying the movies or music and those money is enough for the directors to cover the expenditure. Of course, those directors have their patent of their produce and they have the rights to sue those people who downloaded freely because in some way it is breaking the law just as stealing someone else’s invention. However, not everyone has the money to money to buy it but people have the same rights to enjoy the same entertainment, therefore I don’t think there is anything wrong about downloading.

This debate has been arguing for over a long time, and most of the people still think that it is illegal for people to download things freely from the internet. Indeed, this practice does that the producers lose an amount of money but it won’t let the producer broke. On the other hand, some users could get the benefit from downloading without paying, and the other users still pay for movies and musics to keep the producers rich enough to make the next movie. If we simply look from the producers perspective, then this practice is totally illegal and making them lose money. In contrary, if we look from the users perspective, this is a win-win situation. Everyone could get what they want.

In fact, this practice is very hard to stop right now in the worldwide because if governments are trying to arrest the people who download things illegally, then they might have to arrest half of the country’s population, especially in those developing countries. Poverty is one main reasons that people download things illegally because they couldn’t afford it so we could only accept it rather than discussing this everyday. Being poor is not their fault, but they still have their rights of watching movies and listening music. In conclusion, there is no immediate solution for this issue, what the governments could do is trying to improve the country economically to increase the GDP and to improve people’s life quality.

Nice post Jonathan! There are certainly many sides to this issue. However, I’m not so sure it is only people who can’t afford to purchase music and movies that download such content for free. If given a choice to pay for something or have it for free, I believe many will choose the latter regardless of their financial circumstances.

But your arguments aside, we know that organizations like the Pirate Bay earn revenue from advertising when online users download content through their website. How comfortable are you knowing that while people are getting their movies and music for free, the organizations that facilitate their access are making money in the process? Does this accord with your moral ideal of access for all in response to an unequal distribution of equity?
